Democratic Illinois Rep. Sean Casten announced Friday that his daughter’s death in June was due to a cardiac arrhythmia.
“This past June, my daughter Gwen Casten died of a sudden cardiac arrhythmia. In layman’s terms, she was fine, then her heart stopped beating.”
Gwen Casten, 17, died peacefully in her sleep in June after having dinner with her parents and going out with friends for a few hours.
The congressman said he was looking forward to welcoming freshmen at the University of Vermont this fall after his daughter died.

The family said Gwen was a healthy teenager who ate well, exercised, had regular check-ups, was not plagued with behavioral problems, and was close with friends and family.
In a statement, the family said she was fully vaccinated against COVID-19.
“We are heartbroken, but we are not unique,” the statement read. We are seizing the wrong end of chance coincidence.”
The family said they were grateful for the “outpouring of love” they had received over the past few months.

“We cried again for each of your letters, messages, meals, and flowers, and they are all appreciated. Also, to know how much life Gwen has touched in 17 years.” is comforting,” wrote the family.
They remembered that Gwen had a big, beautiful, kind, and loving heart.

“No one knows when the last heartbeat will come,” the family wrote. “The best thing we can hope for is that when someone we love passes away, we won’t regret the time we were fortunate enough to share.”
