The US House of Representatives passed a federal law on Thursday, with the support of eight Republicans, enshrining contraceptive rights, including drugs used to induce abortion.
With 228-195 votes, lawmakers passed the contraceptive law after limited discussion and no amendments. The law is primarily a message bill that is unlikely to pass the Senate 50-50 and creates a federal right to obtain contraception.

Overall, eight Republicans voted for all Democrats to support the bill.
Support for the bill came from moderate Republicans. Notable Republican supporters included Congressman Adam Kinzinger of Illinois and Congressman Fred Upton of Michigan.

The vote was in response to the recent overthrow of the Supreme Court in the Roe v. Wade case, a groundbreaking 1973 ruling that legalized abortion nationwide. In the decision to return the abortion to the state, the Supreme Court ruled that there was no federal right to the abortion.
