This interview contains spoilers for the first nine episodes of House of the Dragons.
To this day, we don’t really know how Fabian Frankel ended up in the “House of the Dragon”.
“I got an email from my agent saying ‘untitled HBO TV series,'” he said. He was asked to audition for a character named “Clint”.
The stunningly photogenic British actor, who plays the deadly Kingsguard knight Sir Christon Cole, donned all black and settled into a couch at HBO’s New York headquarters last week to continue his story. I auditioned and didn’t hear anything other than that they were looking for a little more Jason Momoa type for the part. I never thought about
Six months later, he was offered the role when rumors circulated that a Game of Thrones prequel was in the works. To All I know is that they couldn’t find the type of Jason Momoa or they decided to change the casting brief.
Judging by the situation in Westeros, Frankel has time to spare. In the latest episode of the show, His Sir Christon strikes the first blow in the civil war for control of Westeros, known as the Dance of the Dragons in George R. R. Martin’s source novel Fire and Blood. and put the crown on his head. The new king, the spooky Aegon II (Tom Glynn Carney). In the books, this earns Cole the nickname “Kingmaker”. However, taking Frankel’s word for it, the accolades have yet to arrive.
These are edited excerpts from the conversation.
“House of the Dragon” was a big hit. how has your life changed?
My life in London is much the same. You’ll probably get a little more calls from your agents, and you’ll get weekly calls from your brothers and friends to talk about episodes. However, my daily life has not changed at all.
London is a good city to calm you down as people tend to be very private and non-invasive. has no such story. I can count on two hands how many times people on the street have paid attention to me.
I’m a little surprised to hear that. I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but you’ve become something of a sex symbol among your fans.
i haven’t. In other words, I think it was inevitable for everyone to fall in love with Laenira. [the princess who seduces Cole, played by Milly Alcock and, later, Emma D’Arcy]but I can tell you now that no one in my close circle passed out.
Let’s talk about Ser Christon’s journey from one side of the conflict to the other. When he first becomes romantically involved with Rhaenyra, he seems a little idealistic and a little naive.
I never felt he was naive. He felt as if he had been dragged out of a life he understood into a life he didn’t understand.
Return to Westeros in “House of the Dragon”
HBO’s long-awaited ‘Game of Thrones’ prequel series is here.
he is a soldier In the army, he doesn’t just become a sergeant or a captain.you work Become a sergeant or a captain. In King’s Landing, it’s people who haven’t earned a hereditary name, title, or the right to be anywhere. You take this character who has nothing in common with the whole world and put him in the center circle. He has a hard time figuring things out.
And, apparently, at some point there is darkness within him and he becomes himself.
Why does he react so enthusiastically when Rhaenyra rejects his marriage proposal and retorts with a kind of lewd marriage proposal of her own?
Nothing special. He asked the girl to run away with him, but she said no. That’s the basics. It doesn’t matter who she is – they have two children, they are young and he has very strong feelings for her. I’ll put it aside, I’ll do what I need to do,’ which in and of itself is rude.
My justification, which is perhaps somewhat controversial, was that Rhaenyra could have let him go at the end of that conversation, or at some point before her wedding. She made him sit the whole time. and he flips over. It’s very clear that he has a temper that we haven’t seen yet.
I like how you said earlier that there is darkness in him. We are much closer to the surface now than before.
yes. The sourness and bitterness of this world washed over him. You are your environment. You are the people you surround yourself with. Ser Christon is surrounded by a group of highly ambitious, highly Machiavellian humans whose only ambition is power. Ultimately, it should look like this: That’s who I am now. It’s too deep. “
And you will be the kingmaker. You shed the first blood in the conflict between the so-called “Green Party” and the “Black Party” and bang poor Lord Beasbury on the head (Bill Patterson). Was it an accident or did Cole kill him on purpose?
I do not want to say. If it’s coming from me, that’s the rule, and I’d like smart “House of the Dragon” fans to see it and judge for themselves.
He then places the crown on Aegon II’s head and places it in front of the public. he is famous now Is it a role he accepts?
I think he considers it his duty to protect these boys on behalf of being Aricent’s sworn protector. He was like a father figure to them. Christon Cole taught and respected children to fight.aimond is there [Aegon’s younger brother, played by Ewan Mitchell] Christon didn’t like the way he spoke and said something like — I don’t remember —
“Every woman is an image of a mother that is spoken of with respect.”
yes. So I think that’s his duty now. He doesn’t want to be a big star or famous. it’s not in his nature. That’s exactly what happened.
Considering what we’ve seen and heard from Christon, this is a very funny line.
I remember thinking it was funny, so I’m glad you thought it was funny. I had a conversation with Sarah. [Hess, the episode’s writer]; Claire [Kilner], our director; when we were shooting that scene in Spain, I talked about how it should be delivered.said i can that’s all It gets interesting. In other words, he didn’t exactly prove that all women are the image of his mother.
That sequence really built Christon’s relationship with Aegon’s younger brother, Aymond Waneye.
Christon sees Amond in himself and himself in Amond. Ivan and I talked about it a lot. He and I spent a lot of time together, walking around Spain together and discussing this relationship.
Honestly, they’re also two of the coolest characters on Green’s side.
Oh buddy, I love that you say that. I’m very Team Green and proud of it. Glad to hear there’s a love for Greens out there. I think we are a force to be reckoned with. A solid and good crew. I back us up with street fights.
It may be too late to ask at this point, but do some of the Ser Christons still love Laenira?
[Smiles ruefully.] First love is first love. I believe that everyone who falls in love for the first time will love them forever. From the first time you hear beautiful music, even if you hear it a hundred times, you will always love it because you remember the first time you heard it. increase.
