Arizona State and Herm Edwards decided to part ways on Sunday after the Sun Devils lost 21 to Eastern Michigan hours before the dismissal.
Arizona State Athletic Director Ray Anderson announced the decision. Edwards and Arizona State University were also the subject of an NCAA investigation of questionable hiring practices.

“We have made a decision to change the leadership of our football program, effective immediately,” Anderson said in a statement. At the heart of this is what’s best for the current team, staff and university, I understand the frustration there is, we have to do it, it’s It starts with today’s decision.”
Edwards went 26-20 in 46 games as Arizona State’s head coach. The team started 1-2 in 2022.
He led the team to three bowl games in four seasons. The team ended the 2021 season with a loss in the Las Vegas Bowl.

The 68-year-old former New York Jets head coach was under investigation for allegedly welcoming recruits to campus during the 2020 NCAA-mandated COVID-19 dead period. He took over as head coach from Todd his Graham in 2018. The team went 7-6 in his first season.
Eastern Michigan was one of the favorites to win the Mid-American Conference. The Eagles went 2-1 on the season. Their only loss was Louisiana.
Arizona State became the first Pac-12 team to lose to MAC School.

“I’m probably more disappointed than anyone else because I’ve been talking about it all week,” Edwards said Saturday night after the loss. “As much as reaching out to the team on your own and saying, ‘Man, you can’t fall into this trap.’ And we did.”
