A traditional blues song at the closing credits of the movie “Delia’s Gone” “Delia” A play by Blind Willie McTell.Broadly speaking, the song tells the story of a gambling woman who gets a bad ending.Johnny Cash variations on itThe film’s titular film depicts Delia as the victim of a jealous suitor.
Delia’s Gone, directed by Robert Boudreau, tells neither of those stories. The film is about brothers Louie and Delia, who live in a difficult rural town, populated mostly by unfriendly white people. they themselves are black. Louis has an intellectual disability that affects his speech and judgment. Meanwhile, her younger sister Delia is unemployed and a little desperate to escape, taking a nonchalant approach to caring for Luis.
When Delia ends up dead on the kitchen floor, Louis is tried for her murder—a crime he claims he didn’t commit—and is convicted. I’m going to a half-baked house.
There, a visitor from the past compels Louis to go out and find Delia’s real killer. Trying to keep Louis down is former sheriff Marisa Tomei, who still resents that she wasn’t taken seriously because she’s a woman, and current sheriff, who is overweight and ridiculed by Tomei’s character. This is Officer Paul Walter Hauser. .
The film sees a persistent “this is… wrong” feeling. It’s more than a superficial portrayal of Louis’ condition or a brief depiction of racial dynamics, but those elements don’t help. Self-seriousness may be spreading.
