Britney Griner’s nine-year prison sentence for drug possession in Russia was upheld on Tuesday.
On February 17, Griner was arrested at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo airport after Russian authorities said he had a vape canister containing cannabis oil in his luggage. On August 4, she was sentenced to nine years in prison after pleading guilty, claiming she was prescribed cannabis for her pain and that she had inadvertently stuffed it.
Griner’s attorneys, Maria Blagovolina and Alexander Boykov, said Monday that the WNBA star “doesn’t expect miracles.”
“She is very nervous awaiting her appeal hearing. Britney doesn’t expect miracles to happen, but she hopes the Court of Appeal will hear the defense’s case and shorten the time.”
