President Biden said he would support Congress on Thursday to end the filibuster to pass a bill protecting the country’s right to abortion.
Biden commented at a press conference in Spain in response to a question from a reporter. Biden initially supported maintaining the Senate filibuster.
Reporters pressured Biden to disclose the president’s actions he could take to secure access to abortion nationwide. Biden replied that the only solution was to codify the Roe v. Wade case in Congress.
“The most important thing we have to do is to clarify how exorbitant this decision was,” Biden said. “We believe that the Roe v. Wade case needs to be codified. The way to do that is to make sure Congress votes to do it.”

“And if filibuster gets in the way, it’s like voting rights. You have to demand an exception to filibuster for this action,” he continued.
Biden had previously called on Congress to codify Law, following a Supreme Court ruling on Friday, but did not seek to end the filibuster. Biden has so far only sought steps to pass voting rights that his administration could not enforce.
Filibuster allows the Senate minority to demand a majority of 60 votes to pass the bill. The current Senate is divided into 50-50 between Republicans and Democrats.
