President Biden has chosen to remain silent amid a wave of controversy surrounding the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s unprecedented raid on former President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago residence.
Monday marks two weeks since an FBI agent landed on a private property in Palm Beach, Fla., and found classified and “top secret” information inside a box of papers.
Biden has yet to comment on the first-ever raid involving a sitting former president. Republicans have accused Biden of weaponizing the Justice Department against his predecessor, who is likely to run for president again in 2024.
White House Press Secretary Carine Jean-Pierre said at a news conference that the president had no prior knowledge of the raid and, like in other countries, only learned about it from news reports. She’s also trying to debunk Republicans’ claims that the raids, which took place just three months after the midterm elections, were politically motivated.
Carine Jean-Pierre says Justice Department’s politicization claims are ‘absolutely untrue’
“When it comes to law enforcement, the Justice Department is independent,” Jean-Pierre told ABC earlier this month. “This is what we believe, this is what the president said. This is not politicizing anything.”
“We don’t interfere, we don’t take explanations,” she added. “Again, the Department of Justice is independent and completely independent when it comes to law enforcement matters. I am not going to comment on that. No comments. For his own sake.”
Biden’s silence is noteworthy, given that he has not refused to comment on Justice Department matters in the past. Shortly after stating that he hoped to prosecute witnesses who defied subpoenas from the Society, he was forced to repeat his commitment to maintaining his independence.

“I hope the commission will track them down and hold them accountable,” Biden said on Oct. 15.
When asked if he thought these individuals should be indicted by the Justice Department, the president replied, “I think so.”

DOJ spokesperson Anthony Corey issued a brief statement later that day, stating, “The Department of Justice makes its own independent decisions in all prosecutions based solely on facts and law.” It will stop completely.”
A White House spokesman pointed to Jean-Pierre’s past comments when he asked Fox News Digital on Sunday whether Biden was planning to deal with the Mar-a-Lago attack. .
