The White House announced on Wednesday that President Biden will nominate Derek Shovin’s prosecutor Jerry Blackwell as a judge in the Federal District Court for the Minnesota region.
Blackwell was part of a legal team that successfully secured a conviction against Chauvin for George Floyd’s 2020 killing. He was one of the seven new judicial elections nominated by the president, and the White House specifically mentioned diversity in its press release.

Blackwell made strong closing arguments and counterarguments in Chauvin’s criminal trial. Chauvin was put on the first trial of four Minnesota police officers charged with Floyd’s death. A jury convicted him in April 2021 and Chauvin was sentenced to 22.5 years in prison.
Chauvin is currently appealing the conviction and seeking a new trial.

In December, Shovin pleaded guilty to the relevant federal civil rights, and in May, the judge agreed that he would be sentenced to 20 to 25 years in prison for serving at the same time as the state’s decision. I accepted it.
