Albert Pujols came one step closer to the 700-home run club on Monday night, tying the record set by Barry Bonds.
The St. Louis Cardinals slugger hit 693 home runs in his team’s 1-0 victory over the Chicago Cubs. He brought his three home runs closer to Alex Rodriguez’s challenge, at least until he became his fourth player to hit 700 homers, and he’s seven homers away.

“I think at the end of the day, you know you have to trust your job. That’s what I do,” the 42-year-old told reporters after the game. And I’ve been working for 22 years, wherever I’ve been playing.”
Pujols hit a home run off of Drew Smiley. He became the 449th pitcher to hit a home run, tying Bonds’ record. It was also Pujols’ 940th multi-hit game, tying Paul Weiner for 10th on the career list.
That was 7 home runs in his last 10 games and 14 in his final season.

“I don’t think [the different pitchers]” Pujols said via MLB.com. [for Tuesday’s doubleheader], maybe I can hit another home run from someone I haven’t faced. ”
Jordan Montgomery threw 99 pitches to keep the Cubs scoreless. He struck out seven and did not walk.

St. Louis moved to 70-51 and Chicago fell to 52-69.
