It wasn’t a good night for New York Yankees outfielder Aaron Hicks.

Hicks was ruled out of the game in the fifth inning by manager Aaron Boone after committing a terrible error that robbed the Yankees of two runs.

Of course, errors occur in baseball. Even the best athletes in their sport make mistakes. However, what Hicks did after making the mistake was likely Boone calling him to the bench.

With two outs in the top of the fourth inning for the Tampa Bay Rays and runners on first and second base, a fly ball was skied to left field toward the foul line and Hicks was chasing it. He should have made the play, but the ball bounced off his glove and hit the dirt on the caution track.

However, he did not realize that Hicks was the only one in the building to touch the ball in the fair area. Instead, he put his hands on his hips and he bowed until he heard a loud cry that the ball was fair.

Thanks to that move, instead of leaving the innings at 1-0, two runs were scored to make it 3-0.

If that wasn’t enough, the next batter was Randy Arrozarena, who raced the ball into left field. This play was much more difficult due to exit speeds of over 100 mph, but Hicks completely misread it and the ball passed overhead. Another run scored to make it 4-0.

Yankees fans went straight to the boos, and in the top of the fifth, Esteban Florial jogged to left field to replace Hicks. It was an inexcusable play, and Boone made it clear when Florial took his place.

It’s also worth noting that many Yankees are injured. So the poaching of a healthy Hicks over a player who’s only had a cup of coffee in the big leagues this season is another sign that the veteran switch-hitter has been poached for his poor play.
