South Carolina women’s basketball coach Dawn Staley took a stand when a BYU fan was accused of throwing racial slurs at a Duke women’s volleyball player late last month.
Gamecocks have canceled a two-game series against the BYU women’s team in retaliation for alleged defamation. However, BYU found no evidence that the volleyball player had been racially abused.

Staley on Wednesday defended the decision to remove the game from the schedule for this year and next year. He said
“I exchanged information with BYU and Duke and still came to the same conclusion,” she said. Greenville News. “In this case, you have to agree not to agree. [Richardson]) come out and say she apologized for hearing something wrong? … that’s her story, that’s what she’s stuck with. Until she comes out and says it — and I’ll be the first to apologize and say I’m wrong — but it hasn’t come out yet, so I’m sticking with it.

BYU completed its investigation into the defamation allegations and announced its findings on September 9.
Staley also released a statement.
“I will continue to stand my ground. After personal research, I made the decision for the well-being of the team. My university, track and field coach Ray Tanner, and others have supported my choices. I regret getting caught up in the criticism. I made it,” she said.
