At least 255 people were killed on Wednesday morning in the quake in eastern Afghanistan, but details of the incident are still limited, according to local officials.
The magnitude 6 quake struck the country’s Paktika state only 10 months after the chaotic withdrawal of the United States and most of the international community’s departure from the region following the Taliban takeover last summer. ..
State media reported the number of deaths and said rescuers had arrived at providence by helicopter. The quake is said to have destroyed at least 90 homes in Paktika and trapped dozens of people under debris.
The video showed that the victims of the incident were being taken by helicopter to be airlifted from the area. Photos distributed online from the area reveal the destroyed stone houses and the inhabitants picking up clay bricks and other rubble.
