Senator Joe Manchin on Tuesday called on Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer to remove language permitting energy from the government’s funding bill.
“It is unfortunate that the US Senator is allowing politics to jeopardize our nation’s energy security,” Manchin, DW.Va., said in a statement. “Failure to vote on something as important as comprehensive permit reform will only embolden leaders like Putin who want to see America fail.”

“For that reason, and my firm belief that we should not be in danger of shutting down the government over politics,” Manchin added, “I urge Majority Schumer to remove the permit language from the continuing resolution to be voted on tonight. requested,” he added.
Manchin struck a deal with Schumer (DN.Y.) last month to vote in favor of the Democratic Party’s social spending and tax bill, bringing the energy Schumer could bring to the Senate vote to enable reforms. They intended to attach the permitted reform proposals from Manchin to a “continuing resolution” to temporarily fund the government until after the election.

But Republicans, angry at Manchin’s support for social spending and tax bills, and progressives who don’t want energy planning easy, joined forces to oppose the bill. They had enough votes to keep the funding bill from crossing the 60-vote filibuster threshold as long as Manchin’s proposal was there.
Many times, Manchin lamented the unlikely “mate.”
Schumer put the blame squarely on Republicans.

“Senate Republicans have made it very clear that they will block any bill that funds the government if it includes a bill that allows bipartisan reform,” Schumer said. “They chose to sabotage rather than work in a bipartisan way to achieve what they’ve always wanted to do.”
“Senator Manchin, myself, and others will continue to discuss how best to ensure that responsible permit reform is passed by the end of the year,” Schumer added.
