Heavy rains in southwestern Pakistan have caused passenger buses to slip off mountain roads and into deep canyons, killing 19 people and injuring 12 people, government officials said.

Mahtab Shah, assistant administrator in the Shirani district of Baluchistan, said about 35 passengers are traveling by bus. He said rescue workers were looking for survivors in the destroyed vehicle and the wreckage around it.

According to Shah, the bus slipped on a wet road in heavy rain, and the driver lost control of the vehicle that had fallen into the canyon about 200 feet (61 meters).

In Pakistan, fatal road accidents are common due to poor road infrastructure, ignoring traffic laws, and poor vehicle maintenance. Twenty-two people were killed in a similar accident last month when a bus fell into a canyon in the Kira Saifuler district.
