Two children drown in eastern El Salvador after being swept away by rain-swollen gully on their way home from school.
El Salvador’s civil defense agency said a third child had been rescued and taken to a hospital for treatment. Local residents eventually recovered the bodies of the two victims on Tuesday night.
The children were from the El Jicaro community of Sociedad, about 42 miles northeast of the capital.

Heavy rains have flooded parts of the country, making roads impassable and causing landslides. Last week, seven people were killed in two landslides on the outskirts of the capital.
Early Wednesday morning, there were reports of several highways being blocked by fallen trees and rocks. Civil Defense reported no casualties, but worked to clear the blockage.
