The ironic “Let’s Go Brandon!” catchphrase used by American conservatives to criticize President Biden has officially been around for a year.
Originally derived from a NASCAR interview, this humorous phrase stands in for the G-rating of the “F— Joe Biden” chants prevalent during the COVID-19 pandemic. This overt statement was chanted at sporting events across the country, in defiance of the president’s coronavirus mandate.
After Brandon Brown’s victory at the NASCAR Xfinity Series race on Oct. 2, 2021, the crowd unleashed “F — Joe Biden” chants during a television interview with the young racer.
NBC reporter Kelly Stavast appeared to misunderstand what the fans were shouting, claiming they were instead saying “Let’s go Brandon!” – Unintentionally constructing phrases.

The video quickly went viral and sparked “Let’s go Brandon!” It becomes a general criticism of President Biden’s policies.
The harmless-sounding phrase enraged pundits and journalists in mainstream media, with outlets from NPR to the Washington Post labeling the word “vulgar.”

Conservative commentators, however, defended the ironic phrasing and argued that the accusation of being rude was hypocritical.
“Let’s go Brandon!” Spending decades normalizing profanity, politicizing all public squares, and then pretending your decency is broken when you hear something you don’t like in inappropriate circumstances is I can’t,” journalist Mark Hemingway wrote on Twitter.
Biden supporters have attempted to dominate the phrase through a pro-Biden meme called “Dark Brandon,” which portrays a serious and vengeful Biden modeled after Batman in The Dark Knight Rises. The White House has also jumped on the trend and is used to celebrate Biden’s policy victory.
